APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM( NO LONGER ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR 2024)If interested in Apprenticeship, the first step is to become a volunteer.
The Last Resort Wildlife’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Apprenticeship offers practical, experiential learning opportunities in a wildlife rehabilitation clinic setting for those who have previous experience working or volunteering with wildlife.Some of the skills learned include providing a wildlife hotline and admissions assistance, species identification, husbandry and handling techniques, basic medical exams and triage, feeding and fluid therapy techniques, enrichment, outdoor cage and facilities maintenance, and monitoring and evaluating patients throughout the rehabilitation process. Apprentices will initially be focusing on orphaned animal care, managing mammal nurseries, and pre-release patients, with the potential to learn about advanced medical care techniques, diagnostics, and critical patient care as their apprenticeship progresses.
Wildlife Rehabilitation Apprentices report directly to the licensed Rehabilitator and veterinary personel on duty. Training is provided as part of the apprenticeship program through workshops, hands-on experience, and daily responsibilities. Those that successfully complete the apprenticeship program will be in a position to pursue obtaining their own wildlife rehabilitation permit.
Qualifications and Experience:
One Year minimum experience in a wildlife rehabilitation facility required ( Volunteer experience at our facility or other licensed wildlife facility is acceptable)
Rabies Vaccinated
Desire to work hands on with a variety of native, NJ Wildlife Species. Including Rabies Vector Species.
Excellent communication and comprehension skills
Demonstrated reliability and punctuality
Availability to volunteer at various days/times throughout the wildlife season.Including mornings, evenings and weekends. Apprentices living on site may be required to be on call overnight for emergencies) .
Ability to lift up to 30 lbs unassisted
Ability to multitask, organize, delegate, and execute instructions clearly
Ability to maintain dignity and self-control in difficult and stressful situations
A true love and respect for all wildlife and the environment
Temporary/Seasomal Onsite housing is available for 2nd year apprentices in some cases.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM( DEADLINE JANUARY 31st)
The Last Resort Wildlife Internship Program is an unpaid learning experience for individuals interested in a fulltime position, which can serve as an exciting pathway into wildlife career opportunities, such as wildlife rehabilitation, wildlife biology, environmental education, and conservation biology.Interns have the ability to learn all about the field of Wildlife Rehab and Conservation and gain invaluable experience in the field while working directly alongside our team of wildlife rehabilitators and veterinary clinic staff , wildlife rehabilitation apprentices and volunteers. This teamwork allows us to provide our sick, injured, and orphaned wild animal patients the highest quality care. Individuals selected will be encouraged to participate in daily responsibilities are primarily focused on care of orphans and general husbandry, and facilities upkeep (including cleaning indoor and outdoor cages, sweeping, mopping, laundry, etc.). Interns will have the opportunity to participate in all phases of wildlife rehabilitation including capture, intake, physical examinations and diagnostics, as well as take part in releasing animals back into the wild. Interns also receive valuable experience in learning how to safely handle wild animals, the importance of nutrition and husbandry in raising orphaned mammals, and understanding the current challenges wildlife in our community face.
Eligibility:
Must be 18 years of age or older
College degree or current college student is preferred, but not required. You may be eligible to receive college credit for your internship
Highly self-motivated
Attention to detail, punctuality, initiative and a strong desire to learn are required
Personal transportation is required
Ability to work in a fast paced environment
Positive attitude and strong work ethic
Rabies Vaccination is required
HOUSING IS AVAILABLE FOR FULL TIME INTERNS
Full-time interns are required to work 40 hours per week in five 8-hour shifts
Priority is given to full time applicants
Part-time interns are required to work a minimum of 24 hours per week
Onsite housing is available for full time interns on a limited basis
Interns living on-site may be required to work overnight/on call shifts
Interns will be required to work some early morning, late evening, and weekend shifts.
ALL INTERNS MUST BE RABIES VACCINATED !!
